The Best Not-a-Speech Wedding Speech I’ve Ever Heard
More often than not, life is not as picture perfect as we see in the movies. There are dull days that wouldn’t have even made the bloopers, and there are times when we don’t know where the plot is going. It is because of this that we can truly appreciate the chapters in our lives that feel as if everything had led up to those moments. For some, this could be a milestone in their career or the birth of their first child. For Tom Fletcher and his wife Giovanna, it was the groom’s speech at their wedding.
Tom didn’t really know how to write a good speech, but being the lead singer of McFly, he sure knew how to write a good song. Just like any other wedding speech, he delivered a heartfelt thank you to everyone he could. It was a happy, easygoing tune that brightened all of the faces in the room. (Although, I could’ve sworn the bride flinched when he sang, “To the bridesmaids, you all look amazing / I wish I could marry you too.”) From the lines in the song, you could see how much he valued and enjoyed his time with all of the people in his life. To the band members of McFly, he sang: “You’re more like brothers, sometimes lovers, but we won’t tell them about that.” He dedicated a verse to both his parents and Gi’s parents, too. He even thanked his sister-in-law (mostly for being hot, but that’s beside the point.)
A lot of tears were already starting to build by then, but I think what really started the waterworks was the part Tom dedicated to Gi. A choir of children had backed him up by then, and rightly so, because he was beginning to tear up himself. “Here’s to my beautiful wife, from today to all my life — it’s all about you.” The entire room roared with applause, and there’s no doubt that it would have been the perfect time for the movie to end. It wasn’t a movie though, and it was much less an ending. It was just the beginning of the life they’d live together.
One of the many things that Tom proved that night was that an ‘I love you,’ can be said in more ways than one. He was terrified of public speaking, but that didn’t stop him from giving the speech in the way he knew how. That’s the gist of truly loving someone really — being terrified or unsure of something but doing it anyway. Despite knowing your shortcomings as a person, you’ll give it all you’ve got regardless. In this plotless, non-movie thing we call life, there won’t be a director that calls the shots — we make our own story. So, make sure to live a life filled with moments worthy of the highlight reel. You can re-watch a movie, but life only happens once — make sure it’s a blockbuster you’ll never forget.
